atal Tinkiring Lab

Background :

The Government of India has setup the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) at NITI Aayog. Realising the need to create scientific temper and cultivate the spirit of curiosity and innovation among young minds, AIM proposed to support establishment of a network of Atal Tinkering Laboratories (ATL). It is a work space where young minds can give shape to their ideas through hands on do-it-yourself mode and learn innovation skills.

Vision :

The vision of ATL is to cultivate 1 million children in India as ‘Neoteric Innovators’.

Objectives :

The main objective is to foster curiosity, creativity and imagination in young minds and inculcate skills such as design mind-set, computational thinking, adaptive learning, physical computing etc. Young children will get a chance to work with tools and equipment to understand what, how and why aspects of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math).

Achievement of ATL by Vishnu School :

Vishnu school was selected for establishing Atal Tinkering Laboratories on 02.12.16. Throughout India 13,005 schools and from Andhra Pradesh 1,207 schools applied for the same. Out of these 595 schools have been shortlisted for final selection (Innovative Challenge). From our school K.Lovely Srenika, D.S.B.Vaishnavi, I.Harish Varma, S.Nikhitha participated in the Innovation challenge conducted at Osmania University, Hyderabad. They presented two projects namely Mission Sujala, Et in pace, focussing on monitoring the water quality of aqua ponds and prevention of accidents caused by drunken drive.

Funding Support :

Vishnu School was provided financial support in the form of Grant-in-aid for a maximum period of 5 years. An amount of Rs. 10.0 lakh was provided for our school for operating ATL, maintenance of equipment, purchase of consumables, organising popular science lecture series and other scientific activities, competitions and payment of honorarium to the faculty and members involved.

Infrastructure :

Our school has provided sufficient space for lab and for meeting rooms and video conferencing hall.

Utilization plan of the lab :

  • Conducting classes for the students, the proper use of tools, software and equipment to ensure this optimum functioning.
  • Students will be trained how to be comfortable and respectful with all the types of equipment & have knowledge of first aid practices prior to using them.
  • Students were given a chance to show their physical ability in new ways.
  • They time themselves in completing projects with sufficient speed and accuracy.
  • Students were encouraged to focus on generating questions more than finding answers.
  • With the help of tools they are trained to make things that can solve the practical problems of mankind.

Timings & Faculty :

We framed a specific time table for ATL basing on students convenience in school hours. Adequate number of faculty members from the school manage the day to day operations of the laboratory.

Activities conducted in ATL of Vishnu School :

ATL was inaugurated in the month of July with an idea of Atal Tinkering Marathon which is a kick start to create enthusiasm in students and to create brilliant ideas in the lab.
I.The following activities were conducted in Marathon week :

1.Green Science :

Students have done research on the environmental problems visiting the field trips to nearby farms and solutions were recorded in the form of video. atal-1

2.Techno Talks :

Students have done research about the greatest inventions of the millennium and shared with their peers. Subject experts were engaged in talks with the students. Also a quiz competition was organised for the same.

4. Teardown sessions :
